After my first round of the 21 Day Fix, I was sold! This program promotes healthy eating and incorporates balanced fitness routines… and it’s all bundled into one great package!

Trey's 21 Day Fix Results

Trey’s 21 Day Fix Results (yes, only 21 days!)

I admit it.  I was skeptical.

Let me first say this…  I was super excited for the introduction of this program because it was our first fitness program that had a “hands on” nutrition component to it.  All of those beautiful nutrition containers.  I couldn’t wait to figure out the system!  However, I was still a bit skeptical about how the program would work and if it fell in line with what my background as a dietitian supported.  But, I knew that my nutrition had gotten off track in the final phase of P90X3 and Trey was feeling it as well.  So, enter 21-Day Fix.  Game on!  We committed to the process and put our noses to the grindstone every single day for the full 21 days.

Time to get started!

The Food

In order to make sure that our DAY 1 (Monday) started off with a bang, we sat down on the Saturday evening before and wrote out our meal plans.  This made grocery shopping super easy and empowered us to make better food choices during the week, even as our schedules got busy and our kids had to be carted all around for after school activities.  We went through this ritual every Saturday for the 3 weeks of the program and went shopping either that evening or Sunday afternoon.  Trey and I both ended up with the same calorie level (1500-1700).  He wanted to lose weight and I wanted to maintain.  [scroll to the bottom of this post to access the menus I created]  We continued to incorporate our Shakeology in to each and every day as our breakfast, so you will see that on the menus that I created.  No way we would even consider giving that up!

It was important for us to get everything lined up and I am a very visual learner, so I incorporated a system to help me figure out how to coordinate our meals to provide balance throughout the day.

Once we had our food figured out, it was time to jump into the workouts!  And, we were super excited about the workouts because they would ONLY BE 30 MINUTES A DAY, 7 days a week.

The Workouts

You can easily see that there is an awesome amount of variety for the 21-day time frame…

  • Total Body Cardio Fix
  • Cardio Fix
  • Upper Fix
  • Lower Fix
  • Pilates Fix
  • Yoga Fix
  • Dirty 30
  • 10-Minute Fix for Abs

Here is our review of the Day 1 video…  Total Body Cardio Fix.  First off, my husband and I were coming off of a round of P90X3, so I really felt like I was going to be “down-grading” my workouts by deciding to do the 21 Day Fix.  Well, see for yourself…

I was sweating buckets… and loving every minute of it!  The workout was challenging and I have become a HUGE fan of our 30-minute workout programs!  And the best part…  I WAS SORE THE NEXT 2 DAYS!!!  That really awesome soreness that indicates to you that you seriously gave it your ALL!  You know, the kind that has you questioning whether or not you can get yourself up off of the toilet after you let gravity pull you on to it…  THAT KIND!  I love that kind!

Here’s a little sneak peak at what ended up being my favorite 21 Day Fix workout… “Dirty 30″…

And, finally, how about some Pilates… with the family (the 2-legged and 4-legged varieties)…

The program is awesome for beginners, though Trey and I are constantly doing a program and we really enjoyed it as well.  Clearly, we are happy with our results in just 21 days!

A brief review of each of the 21 Day Fix workouts…

Yoga:  This workout will help balance, flexibility, and strength, while also increasing circulation and speeding the healing of your muscles.  We both felt that this program was excellent for those who struggle with Yoga or have never done yoga before.  The moves are basic but effective.  This isn’t one of those programs where you totally miss the workout because you are staring at the screen wondering how the heck someone contorted their body in such a fashion.

Pilates:  This Pilates-style workout will help strengthen your core, elongate your muscles, and tighten your glutes and thighs!  The lateral leg raises and additional hip/outer thigh work threw us for a loop!  We had no idea how weak we were in that area, so this was a “pleasant” surprise for us.  Again, this workout is great for those who have experience with Pilates as well as those who have no experience at all.  Autumn is excellent at cueing and the modifier is constantly within view, so you are never wondering what you need to be doing.  This 30-minute workout definitely delivers.

Total Body Cardio Fix:  This complete body workout will help keep your heart rate up, you muscles engaged, and your metabolism revved high… long after the workout is over.  This cardio routine is easily modifiable when necessary.  You will do “rounds” of certain moves/routines, so you always know what is coming up (and more importantly, when the end is near!).  Total Body Cardio Fix incorporates weights (I mostly used 5-15 pounds) along with moves to get your heart rate up.

Total Cardio Fix:  From jumping jacks to burpees, this workout will have your heart pumping and your entire body drenched in sweat!

Upper Fix & Lower Fix:  These two workouts will incorporate weights for your upper body and lower body accordingly.  You will be in constant motion and will focus on form and reps.  This is not a program where you are trying to see how much weight you can lift for 3-5 reps.  This program challenges you to pick a weight that you can use for the allotted amount of time (30-60 seconds) and at the pace shown.  But, don’t be too easy on yourself.  Be sure to choose a challenging weight that allows you to complete the round without sacrificing form.

Dirty 30:  4 rounds, 8 exercises, and 30 minutes to get in, out and on with your day!  We decided that it was called Dirty 30 because the floor of your workout room is littered with dumbbells and exercise mats by the end of the 30 minutes.  What a mess, but an awesome workout that will help you find new limits with your muscle endurance!

10-Minute Fix for Abs (Bonus Workout):  I’ll be honest with you…  Go ahead and say a prayer before you start this one!  This is 10 minutes of non-stop abdominal pounding!  And, I really mean… NON-STOP!  You’ll fool yourself into thinking a break is coming… it’s not.  But hang in there!  You can’t help but feel stronger after doing Fix for Abs.  It will be one of those workouts that you’ll LOVE to HATE!

By the end of the program, I had lost 6 pounds, 2 inches on my waist and 1.5 inches on my hips!  Best of all, I felt great, was full of energy AND I got my abs back!  The best part of it all was that I was able to get my nutrition back on track.  Yes, even dietitians faulted every now and again.  🙂  The meal planning system was easy to use and made meal planning fun!  In our accountability group, it was fun to hear the lingo regarding the containers… “I had a red, yellow, green and blue for lunch today!”

We loved the program and continue to lead an accountability group for those who wish to get started on this program with us.  Don’t overthink it, just DO IT!  We will be with you every step of the way!

If this program sounds like something that you are ready to commit to or have additional questions about, please let me know!  I would love the opportunity to serve you as your personal Beachbody Coach!

  1. Hi Heather, I am already following you on FB and am interested in trying the 21 day Fix. I really like that it has portioned containers as I used to teach my clients to find dishes, containers, whatever they needed to make their measuring easier when dealing with portion control. I tend to have a touch of OCD that way! I am however, curious what it costs to get started? Could you please provide that info for me?]

    Thanks!

I have the same question, the cost of getting started. (I live in Canada) I would also like to know how to download your meal plan sheets. Do you have them available in pdf?

one more question; are you allowed to have coffee on this plan? I don’t drink alcohol. But my crutch is 2 mugs of coffee in the morning with milk and sugar!

Hi Linda! I’ll get some info to you today. Yes, I have the menus available in pdf as well as Excel spreadsheet. As for the coffee, it’s the sugar that won’t be included in the plan. 😉

Hi Heather! I want to purchase the 21 day fix, because I like the focus on nutrition. I also signed up so that you can be my coach. Should I purchase it from you, or just from the website?

Hi Natalie! I emailed you a little more information so that you can decide which option is best for you. 🙂

I AM EXCITED ABOUT STARTING THIS,WHAT IS THE COST?

    • heather on July 20, 2014 at 2:07 pm said:

Hi Kristi! Thanks for your comment! We have a couple of options… The program by itself (containers, nutrition guide & workouts) and then we have the option of adding Shakeology (which is what my husband and I use daily and used while we did the 21 Day Fix). There is “bundle pricing” available if you add Shakeology. Which one would you be most interested in?

Hi Linda, I saw this on an infomercial this morning and really want to try it. I have a bit of ADHD when it comes to working out, i.e., start off strong for a day or 2 and then fizzle out. Plus I east healthy but have a problem with portion control. So this seems like the perfect solution for me! How can I get the program plus Shakeology without paying it in increments? Thanks!

  7. I am starting the program. I am just planning on using whey protein powder for breakfast. I am having trouble menu planning. Could you share yours.

    • heather on August 19, 2014 at 5:12 pm said:

Hi Kenzi! Usually there is not need for a protein powder. In fact, I’ve often seen people sabotage their weight loss efforts by adding protein powders. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t a time or place for them, but you could easily just put a balanced breakfast together or utilize Shakeology if you are interested in going that route. All of my meal plans are under the NUTRITION tab as well as the images from each of our weeks located above. I’d love to hear about your progress! And, if you don’t already have a coach that you are working with, let me know and I’d be happy to get you set up with our team as well as accountability and support as you go through this program and beyond.

  8. Hi Heather-I am on day 5 of the 21 day fix and today I should be doing a cardio workout. The problem is that my thighs are so sore from the other workouts–(I went for a 4 mile walk including hills the same day as lower body workout, and I am not in shape). Is it best for me to do a different workout today-or should I push through? I struggle to walk down starirs and I am worried I will do damage to my muscles. I could swim laps today and pick up on the routine tomorrow.

    • heather on August 19, 2014 at 5:08 pm said:

Hi Tori! Feeling sore is totally normal, especially if you are not used to working out every day. But, the good news is… The cardio workout is going to help with that soreness. I know it seems crazy, but it’s true. Swimming laps will be more strain on your entire body as it will be both resistance and cardio. So, just stick with the schedule as it is and I bet you’ll be feeling better by the end. You are probably due for a nice hot soak in an Epsom Salt bath too! That always helps!

  9. Why bother with losing weight? You are thing to begin with!

Hi There! I just purchased the 21 day fix and I am starting it tomorrow! I was wondering how it worked to have a personal coach to help me, since my biggest struggle is with eating. (what to eat, recipes etc etc) Also, I really liked shakeology but realized that it is much more expensive than other product. Can I replace it with other whey proteins?

  11. I really want to try this . I am 63 yrs…food is not a problem with me and the standarized portion on the plan suit me. BUT…i have a problem with my back I can do most of the excercise but I do not kone if I can do the push ups or the jumping. I am kind of afraid that it can harm me.Right know I am feeling well I do not want a draw back. But I like the program of 21 days…what do u recomend? I need to loose almost 25 pounds.

I just wanted to say Thank you! I am just starting the 21 dAY fix program and was kinda confused on how to plan meals but with your video it really helped. I already have two people that are helping with coaching one main coach and the other is for support. I needed to do research on my own though to fully understand and watching your video helped. So just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!

  14. A fellow mom mentioned the program to me after me after I asked about her weight loss. I have spent the morning looking it up and came across your sweet post-its video on Youtube. I am interested in the cost and the effectiveness of the program for long term weight loss as I am 100lbs overweight and afraid to go for yet another fad diet. You sound like a thoughtful and educated guide so I turn to you for honest advice and tips.
    Thanks,
    Dev (Los Angeles, CA)

  15. Hello! I have tried various other healthy plans and had little to no success losing weight. I have PCOS also so I am not sure if this is interfering at all. Before I invest in the 21 Day Fix, do you have any suggestions? Thanks

  16. I love the way your organized your information! I am considering purchase of 21 day fix and your information helped me decide yes. Thank you.

So far this has been my favorite site to review 21 Day Fix. You guys are so cute! And I love how organized things are, very cut and dry. I have 21 Day Fix ordered as a challenge pack with Shakeology, just anxiously awaiting its arrival now. I have a meal plan prepared for the first week already, but I might use your examples for ideas as well. And I love that you put up some videos so we know what to expect for exercise. Thanks for being such a great resource! And your last video with the dogs made me giggle. 🙂

Hi Heather. I was recently told by a friend about 21 day fix program. I am very interested in doing it, especially with my wedding in September and needing to shape up. I had a baby this past November and am still breast feeding. I read somewhere it is recommended to jump up a calorie level when doing the meal plans to epkeep supply up. Right now I’m currently at the lower end of the 1500-1799 level (1524). Would you still suggest I jump up to the next level?

    Thank you!

Hello Heather! I just received the 21 Day Fix and I am ready to begin. I like how you made it simple for others to make a weekly meal plan. I didn’t purchase the Shakeology because I knew it was going to costly for me to maintain. Can you tell me what I could eat to replace the Shakeology part of your meal plans? I would love to have you as a coach. Is there an extra cost for this?

Hi Heather having watched TV advert for 21 day fix and watching your you tube video am considering buying the product but only if you are able to be my coach. Please email me with info if this is possible. I live in the UK.

  22. hi i am just starting the 21 day fix program and i was wondering how you are able to have 8oz glass of almond milk everyday?? in the book it says you can substitute one yellow container 3 times per week for a 16oz glass of unsweetened almond milk in the 1500-1700 calorie program. i am a cereal lover and would like to have cereal every morning for breakfast ( i hate egg !!! so items for breakfast are kind of limited for me)and i am wondering how to get cereal every morning with milk. I am thinking i can make due with 4oz of milk with my cereal in the mornings but i am not sure if i can have it. I am thinking i could give up one yellow container for 8oz of milk every three days or have 4oz milk every day for six days by taking one yellow container away. is this possible??

    • heather on July 13, 2015 at 1:44 pm said:

Hi Kala! Thank you for your question. Actually, I only use 8 oz. of the unsweetened vanilla almond milk, so since the serving size is 16 oz. to count as 1 yellow container, I am actually just spreading my almond milk servings out over the week. So, in fact, I am having 3.5 yellows of almond milk over the course of the week. So, feel free to have 8 oz. of unsweetened almond milk or the 4 ounces of cow’s milk with your cereal if you like, then using the remaining 1/2 yellow for something else at breakfast or at some other time during the day. I would, however, recommend making sure to add a ‘red’ to your breakfast. You will want to get some protein in there. If you haven’t watched this… https://youtu.be/MDzifZvDR0g… please do as I explain how to break up your foods throughout the day to get the most benefits. Thanks again for your questions!

  30. I ran across your video and really like your ideas of using the small post it notes. I received my program last Thursday and have been overwhelmed with trying to figure out what to eat and when. It would have been nice if this had been laid out better in the book. I am going to sit down this afternoon and get it figured out! If I ever decide to go back to beachbody I will look you up for a coach. They are on my black list.
